WHY CHOOSE STEARIN CANDLES

When you choose a candle from Liljeholmens Stearinfabrik, you have made a good choice for the climate - Liljeholmens's candles are Nordic Swan Ecolabeled and have been manufactured in Sweden since 1839.

When Liljeholmens Stearinfabrik started manufacturing candles in 1839, knowledge, methods, and machines were brought from other countries. In the factory in Oskarshamn, in the southern part of Sweden, the business has been developed and refined over the years, and thus the fine quality of the candles has constantly improved.The manufacturing method and craftsmanship are basically the same as for over 185 years ago. The knowledge of how to make the best use of candle properties is something we carry with us every day. Producing candles of the highest quality requires, first and foremost, experienced and highly skilled staff and carefully selected raw materials. For us, this is always the starting point for improvements in production and the development of new products.

 

MATERIALS


At Liljeholmens Stearinfabrik we embrace a sustainable future, based on our commitment to stearin, rapeseed wax and shea wax.
Our choices are based on the significant advantages of stearin and rapeseed wax over paraffin and soy wax. Locally produced and renewable, stearin and rapeseed wax not only have a lower carbon footprint but also align well with the principles of the EU Green Deal and Nordic Ecolabel standards. They are more environmentally friendly alternatives,
that effectively reduce carbon emissions, protect the rainforest and contribute to a cleaner environment.
The production of our new products in shea stearin, which, like tallow-based stearin, meets the Nordic Ecolabel criteria and is therefore Nordic Swan Ecolabeled, demonstrates our commitment to environmentally friendly products. As a renewable, plant-based supplement, it aligns with our efforts to prioritize sustainable resources, ensuring that our products consistently meet the highest environmental standards.




NORDIC SWAN ECOLABELING

The stearin in Liljeholmens's candles is based on the renewable raw material tallow. Tallow is exclusively a residual product, which in this way has a second use as raw material for the production of stearin.

The stearin in Liljeholmens's shea candles is based on the renewable raw material shea wax, which is extracted from the core of the fruit of the shea tree - a unique crop, as no fertilizers or pesticides are needed for it to grow. The trees, which grow in agroforestry systems in the area known as the shea belt across West Africa, provide an important source of income for communities in the area.

Stearin is thus made from renewable raw materials, unlike paraffin wax, which is made from fossil raw materials such as oil.
Liljeholmen's Nordic Swan Ecolabeled candles do not contain palm oil, which is another reason to choose Liljeholmen's candles - you are making a good choice to save our rainforests!

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel also has strict requirements on how many soot particles a candle may emit when burned and that it must not contain substances that are harmful to the environment or otherwise dangerous to humans and animals. In order for a candle to be Nordic Swan Ecolabeled, there are also requirements for quality and fire safety. All packaging must have safety information and information about the burning time on the packaging or label.

TYPES OF LIGHTS

The candles produced at Liljeholmens Stearinfabrik were originally designed to fit different candle holders and for different occasions. Several types of candles have therefore been named after the function they have had over the years. The Kupé candle, for example, was created for the train compartment (kupé in Swedish) lanterns of the time, while the Lykt & Lucia candle has always been used for lanterns and Swedish traditional Lucia crowns.
Today you will find shapes, lengths and colors for all occasions. The range mixes classics with seasonal trends. Choose the candle and packaging that suits you best right now.

WICK

The wick in the candles is braided so that it will bend at ninety degrees when the candle burns. Then the end of the wick is at the edge of the candle flame, where the temperature is 1400 degrees and the wick burns up completely and at the same rate as the candle. Remember to shorten the wick to about 1 cm before lighting the candle for the first time - this is to avoid the candle running and sooting.

TESTS

All candles are continuously tested in tests at Liljeholmens's laboratory. This includes burning and soot tests, as well as checking and measuring the burning time of the candles.

MANUFACTURING

When Liljeholmens started candle production in Sweden, knowledge, methods and machines were brought from other countries. At the company's own factory in Oskarshamn, in the southern part of Sweden, the business has been developed and refined and the quality of the candles has constantly improved. The craftsmanship is basically the same as it was for  over 180 years ago. We carry the knowledge of how to make the best use of the properties of stearin with us every day.
Candles are produced by filling hot liquid stearin into a heated metal mold. The mold is then slowly cooled with air or water so that the stearin solidifies. A cotton wick is placed in the middle of the mold. Once the candle has solidified, it is removed from the mold, processed and packaged.

SORTING OF PACKAGING

It is very important to sort packaging correctly.
Our paper packaging is sorted as paper and the surrounding plastic (found on, for example, our crown candles, Christin candles and tealights) is sorted as plastic at the recycling station.

SAFETY

  • Do not leave candles unattended. A good rule is that the person who lit the candles is responsible for them - and puts them out!
  • Never leave children or animals alone with candles.
  • Preferably use ceramic and metal candle holders.
  • Make sure that the candle is free and stable both on the base and in the candleholder.
  • Think about where you place the candle, so that, for example, a curtain cannot be fluttered by wind or the elements or the candle is placed above a flammable material such as a sofa, TV or other electrical appliances.
  • Don't place candles too close together - at least 7 cm should be left between two lit candles.
  • Cut the wick to a height of about 1 cm before lighting it for the first time. This will prevent the candle from smouldering and dripping.
  • Never blow out the candle - extinguish it by covering it with a candle extinguisher.
  • Remember not to move your tea light when it is burning. There is a risk that the growth support holding the wick in place in the center of the holder will move, and this can cause the candle to get too hot and the flame to get higher. In this case, extinguish the candle by covering it with a pot lid, for example, do not try to blow out the candle.
  • If you have to move the candle, extinguish it first, wait until the stearin has solidified, and then move the candle.
